ARTIST’S STATEMENT

The artistic influences in my life have been the years in the ballet studio as a young girl, and later, the program in interior design at the Rudolph Schaefer School of Design. This last was my introduction to color theory; in all my work I strive for a harmonious sequence of colors related in hue yet covering a range of value and intensity.

For this reason I have found transparent watercolor to be a particular joy with its spontaneous blending of hues on paper. It is Asian art, Chinese painting especially, which has inspired me to translate, interpret and express my own feelings in the depiction of florals and views of nature. There is a strong rhythm in Chinese painting, a skillful build up of modular forms and, most importantly, a true sense of the artist in every painting.

In this way I am grateful indeed for this artistic gift from Asia. I also look for continuous spatial relations in all design whether it be the lay out of a kitchen, the decoration of a living room, the cut of a dress or the more esoteric creation in sculpture and painting. After years of enjoying both modern and traditional modes I realize that it is the principles of design that interest me; I thus strive for a wholesome ‘oneness’ in every composition. My watercolors, mostly landscapes and florals, reflect the movement, color and rhythm that I see in all nature. With the paint brush I again feel - as in the ballet studio years ago - that I am really dancing.
